Helio P80 and Helio P90 coming to take on Snadpragon 670
New Chips For Mid-Range Phone to Take on 10nm Snapdragons
Known Leaker Roland Quandt leaked MediaTek is about to release Helio P80 and Helio P90 this year. Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturer is feeling the heat from Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and the newly announced Snapdragon 670 as design wins have dried up all of a sudden.
Besides Oppo’s new Realme 2 and F7/F9, no new Helio P60 phones have been announced (if you don’t count UMIDIGI Z2 Pro). The truth behind it, is that Snapdragon 710 ( Xiaomi Mi 8 SE ) is taking over $350-$450 phones and Snapdragon 670 is about to hit the $250-$300 market. On top of that, Helio P60 performance is only comparable to SD660. Furthermore, SD670/710 are a good 20% faster and more efficient thanks to the 10nm fabrication.
Helio P80 and Helio P90 Possible Specifications
Helio P80/90 is meant to upgrade to ARM A75/A55 Octa-Core (2+6 or 4+4 core config) configuration and still use TSMCs 12nm node.
Recently, MTK started using PowerVR graphics again for Helio P22 and A22, but I believe ARM’s G72 will still be used in a MP4 core configuration. This should in total boost P80′s performance by 20% (compared to P60), to compete with Snapdragon 670. Another option is to use a PowerVR Series9XE GPU, but I feel that MTK will not opt for that. Consumers trust Mali G72 graphics more. In short, ARM Mali graphcis are more marketable and feature better software support by Game Developers.
Helio P60 was Impressive But…
I was very impressed by Helio P60 in terms of general performance and cameras when I reviewed Realme 1. I did however conclude that Gaming performance is not up to par with Snapdragon 660, let alone 670/710. The situation was the same with P22 which I reviewd in Xiaomi Redmi 6.
First phones to use the new Helio P80/90 will be made by Oppo, so it’s likely Realme 3 or their next F-series phone F11 (since F9 is already confirmed to carry P60).
Helio P80 and P90 Conclusion – Faster $250 phones are coming this year
Nice to see Qualcomm getting competition for SD670 and us as consumers will only benefit from it. To those of you who still think MediaTek chips are still behind Qualcomm you should try the new A22/P22/P23/P60 which are superb chips for the price nad no longer have Thermal or Battery Drain issues and support Dual 4G/VoLTE and superior ISP.
