MediaTek Helio P22 launched – Smarter, Faster and more Efficient $150 Phones!
New Budget SoC from MTK will make your budget phone much faster and cooler
Today, May 23rd MediaTek announced the upcoming new phone SoC MediaTek Helio P22 to be officially available! This new SoC will targer $130-170 Phones with best efficiency, Octa-Core design, embded Facial Recognition and PowerVR Graphics!
More and more people are looking into cheaper phones as backup or main choice and for the last few years MT6750T has been the dominant chioce. With Snapdragon 450 the old 28nm MTK Octa-Core was finished. Even with the added Adnroid 8.0 Oreo support, MT6750T is just too power-hungry and avoided of still plaguing thermal issues.
Mediatek already launched their new enty-level MT6739 Quad-Core with dual 4G VoLTE and PowerVR8100 Graphics with great success. However, that leaves a gap that Helio P23 can’t fill and enters the P22.
MediaTek Helio P22 Specifications
Helio P22 is built using 12nm fabrication process (same as Helio P60) and geatures a Snadpragon 625-esque CPU configuration with 8 x 2.0GHz A53 Cores and “previous” iPhone graphics with a dual-cluster “Rogue” graphics chip 8320 which supports Vulkan and OpenCL 3.2.
The new Helio P22 is meant to boost cameras with a stronger ISP and built in Facial Recognitin AI Software. The chip is said to be optimized especially for 18:9, 19:9 and 20:9 aspect ratio resolution.
The biggest draw of the chip for me is the efficiency factor. Having 12nm A53 Octa-Core and scalable PowerVR graphics it should in theory match and even exceed SD450 in terms of battery savings. Offering dual 4G with dual VoLTE is another bonus.

The latest MediaTek SoC is also part of Google’s partnership program, meaning it will come with Android 8.1 and receive at least Android P support. In addition, there will be fast-charging. Helio P22 supports MediaTek Pump Express feature to boost charging times.
Theoretically, Helio P22 Antutu score should be slightly lower than Helio P23, probably around the 70,000 Points mark with 900/3600 Geekbench.
For me, MediaTek Helio P22 brings a better and more efficient option for people looking at a fast $150 Phone with the latest Android.
